Overview

POST GRADUATE DIPLOMA IN EDUCATION

The objectives of the program are to :

  1. Equip students with knowledge, skills, and techniques in teacher education and their application to teaching in schools.
  2. To enable students to demonstrate knowledge and understanding of a diverse range of national education issues including current and emerging trends.
  3. Enable the students to demonstrate critical thinking and skills with regard to theory and practice of education.
  4. Produce professionals who can participate in curriculum design, development and implementation and evaluation.
  5.  To produce educators who have latest and competent skills including ICT skills to teach the current generation of leaners.
  6. Educate, train and prepare personnel and researchers for educational institutions, governmental and non-governmental organizations, and assessment and resource centres.
  7. Mentor and guide would be teachers and other personnel to lead, manage, administer, and supervise education programmes as well as to serve as policy formulators, implementers, and change agents.
  •    The course shall run over a minimum period of four (4) semesters and a   maximum of ten (10) semesters of fifteen (15) weeks each.
  •     The course shall comprise course work, examination and research project.
  •     The course work shall consist of eleven (11) core course units, and one (1)     elective
  •     The student shall be required to take a minimum of two (2) course units and a     maximum of four (4) course units in a semester
  •     The School reserves the right to decide the elective to offer in any academic year.
  •     The research project shall be equivalent to four course units, and it shall be     undertaken after completion of coursework.

Admission Requirements

i) Holder of a degree of Bachelor of Arts (B.A) or Bachelor of Science (B.Sc.) of Second Class Honours Lower Division of the University of Nairobi or equivalent qualification from any other university recognized by the University of Nairobi Senate.

ii) Holder of a degree of Bachelor of Arts (B.A) or Bachelor of Science (B.Sc.) Pass of the University of Nairobi or equivalent qualifications from any other university recognized by the University of Nairobi Senate and two years working experience

*Teaching Practice will be based on two Teaching Subjects, therefore there should be at least two Teaching Subjects in the degree transcript.

Graduates of this course can be employed by the TSC, Private educational Institutions, Government Departments, Disciplined Forces, Ministries, NGOs, Education in Emergencies, Private Sectors i.e. Banks, Financial Institutions and Business enterprises, International Organizations among many others.

Exam Regulations

EXAMINATION REGULATIONS

 

  •       For the award by the PGDE, a candidate will be required to pass in all prescribed   course units taken.
  1. Each course unit shall be examined by a two (2) hour written examination paper at the end of the semester during which the course was offered.
    1. Each candidate will undergo and pass a supervised Teaching Practice in his/her two teaching subjects;
    2. The written examination shall constitute 70% of the marks in each course unit while the course work constitutes 30%.
    3. Coursework assessment shall comprise assignments, tests, projects and practical work including laboratory work where applicable.
    4. The pass mark shall be 50%.
    5. A candidate who fails to satisfy the examiners in any unit, with a mark of below 50% may, on the recommendation of the Board of Examiners and approval by Senate, be allowed to take supplementary examination(s) in the failed examination(s) within a period of thee (3) months from the date of examination
    6. A candidate who fails in the supplementary examinations may on the recommendation of the Board of Examiners and approval of Senate, repeat the failed units in the next semester
    7. A candidate who fails after repeating will be allowed to sit supplementary examinations.
    8. A candidate who fails in the supplementary examinations shall be discontinued.
    9. A candidate who fails in more that 10 course units in any one semester will be discontinued.
    10. The maximum score for supplementary examination shall be 50%.
    11. No candidate will be allowed to be registered in the course for more than three years.
    12. The final award of the PGDE will be based on the average marks obtained in all the prescribed course units  and shall be classified as follows;

a)         Pass with Distinction -           75% and above

b)         Pass with Credit         -           65 % -74%

c)         Ordinary Pass             -           50% - 64%

d)         Fail                              -           49% and below
