Overview

MODE OF STUDY

All Programmes in the Department are offered through the Open, Distance & e-Learning mode of studies.This involves Limited face-to-face Residential Sessions to provide overview of the course at the commencement of a semester, continuation of a semester, and revision period before examinations and specially designed self-instructional study modules/lecture series availed to the students at registration time through the University’s Multimedia Portal or in Print.

INTAKES

INTRODUCTION

The course is designed to provide knowledge, skills and attitudes in adult and continuing education. The courses are intended for those involved in the academic and professional fields relating to adult education and/or community development.

 COURSE OBJECTIVES

The broad objective of the programme is to impart students with skills in adult education and community development. The specific objectives are:

  1. To introduce students to the general issues and approaches in adult

education and community development

  1. Produce adult, distance, youth and community educators with knowledge, attitudes and skills appropriate for management and promotion of adult, youth and community development.
  2. Prepare competent personnel of adults, the youth, and community who can plan, supervise, train, monitor and evaluate adult, community and youth programmes.
  3. Build the capacity of personnel to spearhead research and documentation of adult and community development.
  4. Train personnel who can develop capacity for entrepreneurship in communities.
  5. Advance professional knowledge and skills in distance, youth, adult and community development as a discipline.

Course Structure

  • The Bachelor of Adult Education and Community Development will run for a minimum of eight semesters and a maximum of 16 semesters from the date of registration
  • The minimum semester load shall be two course units and the maximum shall be eight course units
  • Each course unit in the programme shall be taught for a minimum of 45 hours
  • The course units are divided into common, core , specialization and electives
  • Each student shall be required to undertake a practicum or teaching practice during the eighth semester which will constitute two (2) course units.

Admission Requirements:

  1. KCSE certificate with a minimum aggregate of C+.
  2. KACE Certificate with a minimum of two Principal Passes
  3. KCSE mean grade of C plain or equivalent plus a Diploma from an institution recognized by the University of Nairobi Senate
  4. A P1 Certificate from a teacher training college recognized by the University of Nairobi Senate
  5. KCSE with a mean grade C- or equivalent plus a Certificate and a Diploma from an institution recognized by the University of Nairobi Senate.
  6. KCE, DIV. III or equivalent plus a Diploma from an institution recognized by the University  of Nairobi Senate
  7. KACE or equivalent Certificate with one Principal Pass plus a recognized Diploma.
  8. KACE Certificate with a minimum of two subsidiary passes plus a Diploma from a recognized institution.
  9. International Baccalaureate Diploma.
  10. A Degree or equivalent qualification from a recognized University

Career prospects

Graduates produced in the Adult Education & Community Development will have capacity to work in various areas as extension workers in such areas as agriculture, community development health, commerce, NGO’s dealing with education and development projects, teachers in adult education programme, in-service training personnel, principals and senior staff of community training centres, disciplined forces and personnel in related field.

  • Please note that the course runs for a minimum of 8 semesters, which constitute 4 academic years and for purposes of billing the practicum is considered as two (2) units.

Exam Regulations
  • EXAMINATION REGULATION

         Except as hereunder specified, common university examination regulations shall apply

  1. There shall be University examinations at the end of each semester. All course units shall be examined and written examinations processed at the end of the semester in which they are taken
  2. A candidate shall NOT be permitted to sit an examination unless he/she has attended prescribed courses of study in accordance with University regulations and to the satisfaction of the department
  3. Each course shall be examined by a two-hour examinationAssessment of each candidate’s performance in the course unit taken shall be through Continuous Assessment Tests (CATS) and end of semester examinations based on percentage grades.  CAT assessment(s) shall constitute 30% of the total marks in a given unit and shall consist of an average of at least two (2) assignments while end of semester examinations shall constitute 70% of the unit examined
  4. Each course unit shall be graded out of an examination of 100 marks, and the pass mark shall be 40% for each unit.  These marks shall be translated into letter grades as follows:-

70% - 100%      - A

60% - 69%        - B

50% - 59%        - C

40% - 49%        - D

Below 39%       - E

 

  1. A candidate who fails any end-of-semester examination paper at the first attempt shall be allowed two more attempts to sit and pass that paper when a supplementary examination is offered.
  2. A candidate who fails a course unit may, in consultation with the department and with approval by the School, substitute that course unit as long as it is not a core unit with another of the same level from the same unit. This regulation shall apply in Levels III & IV
  3. Subject to regulation 6.8 above, a candidate who has failed grades shall not be allowed to proceed to the next Level unless he/she has passed the failed units.  However, if the failed units happen to be prerequisites for other advanced courses in the same level, the candidate must first pass them before he/she can be allowed to register in the advanced units that require the prerequisites. 
  4. A supplementary examination shall carry a maximum of 40% of the total marks and coursework marks shall not be considered.  When retaken, a unit shall carry a maximum of 100% of the total marks and course work shall be considered. 

      No candidate with failed grade(s) shall be allowed to proceed to the next level unless he/she has  successfully taken and passed the supplementary examination(s).
