Overview
INTRODUCTION
The Master of Arts in Peace Education is designed to build the capacity of educators to contribute to educational, social, and cultural change through peace education.
MODE OF STUDY
All Programmes in the Department are offered through the Open, Distance & e-Learning mode of studies.This involves Limited face-to-face Residential Sessions to provide overview of the course at the commencement of a semester, continuation of a semester, and revision period before examinations and specially designed self-instructional study modules/lecture series availed to the students at registration time through the University’s Multimedia Portal or in Print.

PROCEDURE FOR APPLICATION (done online)
- Log on to the University of Nairobi Website application link www.application.uonbi.ac.ke.
- Type and enter or click on the slot written REGISTER to register your email with the University online application system and proceed.
- Select the School as School of Open &Distance Learning and the mode of study as ‘distance learning’
Application Fee
- Application fee is Ksh. 3,000/- and is non-refundable. Its payable at the last step of the online application vie Mpesa Paybill number or deposit to KCB account or credit card or visa, details which are provided in online application portal as the application is done.
Structure
Course Structure
- The course shall run for a minimum of four semesters and a maximum of twelve semesters of fifteen weeks each.
- The course shall consist of fourteen (14) taught course units, and a research project, which shall constitute four (4) units. A student will have taken eighteen (18) units in total.
- The course shall consist of course work, examination and a project
- The students shall be required to take a minimum of two (2) units and a maximum of five (5) course units in a semester
- Each course unit shall be taught for forty five hours (45) consisting of lectures and
tutorials.

Admission Requirements
- A holder of Bachelors’ Degree with at least Second class Honours Degree, Upper Division of the University of Nairobi, or an equivalent qualification from other institutions recognized by Senate.
- A holder of Bachelors’ Degree, Second Class, Lower Division with at least 2 years of relevant working experience.
- A holder of Bachelors’ Degree with a Pass and at least three years of relevant working experience or Postgraduate Diploma.
- Any other qualification equivalent to the above from institutions recognized by University of Nairobi Senate.

Career Prospects
Graduates of this course will have capacity to work in the many peace building initiatives. Specifically local & international NGOs working in Peace Building Projects, Education in Emergencies, Relief Organizations. UN Agencies and other International Organizations, Government Departments, Ministries among many others.

Exam Regulations
EXAMINATION REGULATIONS
- Written examinations
- All course units taken in a given Semester shall be examined at the end of that
semester.
- A candidate shall be required to pass in all taught course units in order to be
allowed toproceed to the research project.
- A course unit shall be examined by written examination of 3 hours duration.
- Pass mark shall be 50%
- Continuous Assessment Tests shall constitute 30% and the final examination 70%
- A candidate who fails in any given unit shall sit supplementary examination.
- A candidate who fails a supplementary examination shall repeat the failed unit.
- A candidate who fails after repeating a failed unit shall sit a second
supplementary examination
- A candidate who fails after sitting a second supplementary examination shall be
discontinued.
- The maximum score in a supplementary examination shall be 50%
- Project Examination.
- The pass mark for research project shall be 50%
- The research Project shall be equivalent to four (4) course units. The proposal
presentation shall constitute 30% and the final project shall constitute 70%.
- A candidate who fails in project paper shall be required to re-submit the
research projectfor upto two (2) times within the prescribed period.
- The maximum score in a re-submitted research project shall be 50%.
- A candidate who fails in the final re-submitted research project shall be
discontinued.
8.0 AWARD OF THE DEGREE
The final degree awarded shall be Master of Arts inPeace Education (MA-PE).
