MODE OF STUDY
All Programmes in the Department are offered through the Open, Distance & e-Learning mode of studies.This involves Limited face-to-face Residential Sessions to provide overview of the course at the commencement of a semester, continuation of a semester, and revision period before examinations and specially designed self-instructional study modules/lecture series availed to the students at registration time through the University’s Multimedia Portal or in Print.

ADULT EDUCATION AND COMMUNITY DEVELOPMENT COURSES
Introduction
The courses are designed to provide knowledge, skills and attitudes in adult and continuing education. The courses are intended for those involved in the academic and professional fields relating to adult education and/or community development.
OBJECTIVES
The aim of this course is to provide professional training for adult educators.
By the end of this course the learners should be able to:
(a) Provide leadership in adult education institutions and programmes;
- Demonstrate awareness of the development problems and design strategies for solving them;
- Carry out research in adult education;
- Identify training needs in adult education;
- Produce and disseminate adult education materials and information;
- Development adult education curricula;
- Plan and administer adult education programme;
- Provide entrepreneurship skills in the community

PROCEDURE FOR APPLICATION (done online)
- Log on to the University of Nairobi Website application link www.application.uonbi.ac.ke.
- Type and enter or click on the slot written REGISTER to register your email with the University online application system and proceed.
- Select the School as School of Open &Distance Learning and the mode of study as ‘distance learning’
Application Fee
- Application fee is Ksh. 3,000/- and is non-refundable. Its payable at the last step of the online application vie Mpesa Paybill number or deposit to KCB account or credit card or visa, details which are provided in online application portal as the application is done.
Structure
CERTIFICATE IN ADULT EDUCATION AND COMMUNITY DEVELOPMENT
Course Duration: 6 Months
Course structure
- The course shall be offered in a minimum of one semester
- It will be taught in both face to face and distance education methods
- Each course unit shall be covered in 45 contact hours.
Admission Requirements
CERTIFICATE IN ADULT EDUCATION AND COMMUNITY DEVELOPMENT
Entry Requirements:
- KCSE Mean Grade C- and its equivalent
- Division IV or its equivalent or qualification from Institutions recognized by the Senate
- KCSE mean Grade D+
- or its equivalent and a practitioner in the relevant area or higher qualifications from institutions recognized by senate.

Career prospects
Graduates produced in the Adult Education & Community Development will have capacity to work in various areas as extension workers in such areas as agriculture, community development health, commerce, NGO’s dealing with education and development projects, teachers in adult education programme, in-service training personnel, principals and senior staff of community training centres, disciplined forces and personnel in related field.
Fees and Funding

Fees: Ksh. 24,000/-
Students are requested to pay their fees by direct cash deposit at any Absa Bank branch to UON CESSP COLLECTION A/C NO. 2032771362 ABSA BANK, ABSA PLAZA. Please take note that cash payments or cheques will not be accepted.
Exam Regulations
EXAMINATION REGULATIONS
(a) The examination requirements of the University of Nairobi shall apply in all cases
(b) All course units shall be examined during the academic year in which they are studied.
(c) No candidate shall be allowed to sit any examination unless he/she has attended at least two thirds of the lectures delivered.
(d) The pass mark for each paper shall be 40%.
A candidate who misses to sit an examination with a valid reason shall resit the examination during the regular semester examinations or any other time it is offered.
(a) Distinction - 70% and above
(b) Credit - 56% to 69%
(c) Pass - 40% to 55%
(d) Fail - 39% and below
