Overview

MODE OF STUDY

All Programmes in the Department are offered through the Open, Distance & e-Learning mode of studies.This involves Limited face-to-face Residential Sessions to provide overview of the course at the commencement of a semester, continuation of a semester, and revision period before examinations and specially designed self-instructional study modules/lecture series availed to the students at registration time through the University’s Multimedia Portal or in Print.

INTRODUCTION

The courses are designed to provide knowledge, skills and attitudes in adult and continuing education. The courses are intended for those involved in the academic and professional fields relating to adult education and/or community development.

OBJECTIVES

The aim of this course is to provide professional training for adult educators.

By the end of this course the learners should be able to:

 Provide leadership in adult education institutions and programmes

  • Demonstrate awareness of the development problems and design strategies for solving them
  • Carry out research in adult education
  • Identify training needs in adult education
  • Produce and disseminate adult education materials and information
  • Development adult education curricula
  • Plan and administer adult education programme
  • Provide entrepreneurship skills in the community

PROCEDURE FOR APPLICATION (done online)

  • Log on to the University of Nairobi Website application link www.application.uonbi.ac.ke.
  • Type and enter or click on the slot written REGISTER to register your email with the University online application system and proceed.
  • Select  the School  as School of Open &Distance Learning  and the  mode of study as ‘distance learning’

           Application Fee

  • Application fee is Ksh. 3,000/- and is non-refundable.  Its payable at the last step of the online application  vie  Mpesa Paybill number or deposit to KCB account or credit card or visa, details which are provided in online application portal as the application is done.

Course structure

  • The course shall be offered in a minimum of two semesters and a maximum of six (6) semesters.
  • It will be taught in both face to face and distance education methods
  • Each semester shall be 15 weeks or equivalent distance study hours.
  • A student shall take a total of fourteen course units, thirteen (13) core, and one elective.
  • A minimum of 3 course units and a maximum of 7 course units shall be taken in a semester.
  • Each course unit shall be covered in 45 contact hours.

Admission Requirements:

  1. At least C (Plain) in KCSE or its equivalent
  2. Minimum D+ (Plus) & above in KCSE  with a professional certificate from a recognized institution
  3. Division III in ‘O’ Levelsand above or its equivalent qualification
  4. At least one Principal in ‘A’ Level
  5. Adult Education Practitioner with a Division IV or above at ‘O’ Levels & an Adult Education  Teachers Certificate or equivalent qualification from a recognized institution

Career prospects

Graduates produced in the Adult Education & Community Development will have capacity to work in various areas as extension workers in such areas as agriculture, community development health, commerce, NGO’s dealing with education and development projects, teachers in adult education programme, in-service training personnel, principals and senior staff of community training centres, disciplined forces and personnel in related field.

Exam Regulations

EXAMINATION REGULATIONS

 

(a)       The examination requirements of the University of Nairobi shall apply in all cases

(b)       All course units shall be examined during the academic year in which they are studied.

(c)       In addition to the written examinations at the end of each semester, there will be continuous assessment comprising written assignments, tests, demonstrations and projects.

(d)       No candidate shall be allowed to sit any examination unless he/she has attended at least two thirds of the lectures delivered.

(e)       Each course unit, except the research project, shall be examined by a two (2) hour written examination at the end of the semester during which the course is offered.

(f)        Continuous assessment shall account for 30% and the end of semester examinations shall account for 70%.

(g)       The pass mark for each paper shall be 40%.

(h)        Each student shall be required to write a project report equivalent to  course units.

  1. A candidate who fails to satisfy the examiners in a unit may on the recommendation of the Board of Examiners, subject to the approval of the Senate, be allowed to retake examination(s) in the failed unit  when next offered, upto two times subject to payment of the prescribed examination fees.
  2. A candidate who misses to sit an examination with a valid reason shall resit the examination during the regular semester examinations or any other time it is offered.
  3. A candidate who fails up to two re-sits shall be required to retake the failed units.
  4. The maximum score for re-sits shall be 40%.
  5. A candidate who fails in more then four units in the course will be allowed to repeat one academic year of study externally.
  6. A candidate who fails more than five units in a mark below 40% in one semester will be discontinued.
  7. The final award of the Diploma in Adult Education and Community Development shall be based on the average of the candidate’s scores in all the 14 units offered in semester one and two.  The classification of the diploma shall be as follows:

(a)       Distinction                  -           70% and above

(b)       Credit                          -           56% to 69%

(c)       Pass                             -           40% to 55%

(d)       Fail                              -           39% and below
